Architectural Design 101

Architectural Design 101

Architectural Design 101 is a sample e-learning module developed as part of the LDES 7202 course in the Learning Design and Technology (LDT) program at Georgetown University. The module introduces undergraduate students, and any learner with no prior experience in the field, to the fundamentals of architecture and basic design principles through an accessible, beginner-friendly learning experience. The module was designed with first-time learners in mind. It builds understanding progressively starting from core ideas and connecting them to real-world environments that learners can recognize and relate to. The instructional approach prioritizes curiosity and engagement alongside content comprehension, creating an entry point into the discipline that feels inviting rather than intimidating. The module is structured for high-flex learning, supporting self-paced, asynchronous engagement. Multimedia elements, including visual, textual, and interactive components, such as H5P elements, are integrated throughout to accommodate different learning styles and maintain engagement across the full module. This design approach ensures the content is usable across a range of learning contexts, from fully online to hybrid delivery. Developed course Architectural Design 101 demonstrates the application of instructional design principles, learner-centered sequencing, high-flex delivery, and multimedia integration to a content-rich, technical subject. The module serves as both a learning resource and a practical illustration of how thoughtful design can make complex disciplines accessible to complete beginners.
